Angie Marasco Callen, the Executive Director of The Red Brick, spoke to Rotarians about supporting entrepreneurship and innovation in Nonprofits.  In April, 2013 she joined the Red Brick after a career in civil engineering. In a short time, her organization has become a model and leader for other non-profits to follow.  She is acclaimed for the incredible growth The Red Brick has realized through her leadership, and in 2015 was named one of Aspen’s six Women of Influence and a key member of Aspen's next generation of leaders by Aspen Magazine.

The mission of The Red Brick is building and strengthening community while creating an inspiring home for local organizations and the arts.  This highly influential non-profit has become a premier arts organization in the Aspen community. Callen's belief that the status quo is not acceptable has led to tremendous innovation and growth.  As The Red Brick programming has increased, so has its visibility.  She sums up her entrepreneurial mindset by stating "the more you grow, the more you grow."

During her highly motivational speech, she identified five areas to support and inspire non profits:
  1. Community- get involved, be the change, lead the change
  2. Speak up- to implement change, be a disruptor.  Great things never came from comfort zones
  3. Promote alternative thinking- instead of thinking outside the box, get rid of the box.  Hiring the right staff and looking at issues more optimistically can change and drive innovation
  4. Trust and support- trust the people that are there to make things happen, trust the process and those working hard to achieve a vision
  5. Champion the cause- not as it pertains to the mission, but a champion for the growth cause.  Positive results become addictive.
Under Callen's leadership, during her short tenure Red Brick programming has multiplied by six.  They support local artists, manage a community oriented gallery, provide a full seven-week lineup of summer camps, offer after school programs, and administer art education for beginners and experts.  The next steps for The Red Brick is strategic planning to ensure long-term sustainability and success.  With Callen at the helm, the Aspen community should be very excited to see what The Red Brick achieves in the next 5-10 years.
