Speaker:  Jill Dougherty is a distinguished visiting practitioner at the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, a global fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and a CNN Contributor who provides expert commentary on Russia. Her articles have appeared in the Washington Post, The Atlantic, and the Moscow Times. She is also a member of the Rotary Club of Seattle.

Jill was once kissed by Vladimir Putin; she used this experience as a segue into analyzing who he is, and what he is up to! In response to questions from Rotarians, Jill speculated about Putin's "endgame." Russian tanks are symbolic, she stated, what we really should be concerned with is the global investment of Russian money.

Ending on a positive note (with Peter Waanders tugging at her shirt sleeve to leave), Jill mentioned that "something is happening in the minds of young Russians. They want a better life; they don't want Russia cut off from the rest of the world."

Visiting Rotarians:  David Grimes , Susan O’Neal, and Donna Jennae

President Scott Russell  shared with the club trivia about ice cream. You will not need to know this.

Head Duck Mike Kosdrosky reminded Aspen Rotarians - including our Gold Leaf members - that everyone is expected to have at least one job on Saturday, August 12. You probably have received an email from Susan Gomes with your assignment(s). Questions? Email Susan at  susangomes78[at]gmail.com.

Same as last year, The Aspen Backcountry Marathon will have its finish line in the Ducky Derby Park. The first finisher might arrive as early as 9:30 AM; the last finisher? 2:30 PM!

Liz O'Connell Chapman, City of Aspen Waste Reduction and Environmental Health Specialist, gave Rotarians the dismal news that our waste diversion efforts were so poor last year, that every container went to the landfill! She asked Rotarians to do better this year. "anything will be an improvement over last year," she stated.
