The Back of Christina King's head

Moderated by Christina King, this panel of local newspaper columnists discussed the implications of Aspen's being a "newspaper town."  Most locals and visitors start their days checking the local papers to stay up on what's happening and the latest water cooler talk.   Some things discussed were:

The central role of the two local papers in Aspen's community

The standards for publishing news versus the standards for letters to the editor

Pluses and minuses of online comments feature

What's behind writing a headline

Local newspapers and the four way test

What consideration should be given to the emotional impact on readers of the stories that are run; how to balance sensitivity with the duty to report the news

How much gold and survival food should the average Aspen senior stockpile

Guest: Dieter Gruen, guest of Norm Bacheldor.

Raffle:  Won by Dan Johns, but the jackpot eluded him by one suit.

Kathy Klug announced that volunteers are needed for an event at AHS on March 16 to provide advice to students on career paths and opportunities.

Susan Gomes announced that the Shining Stars event was very successful.  She thanked all who helped.  Susan also invited any Rotarians who want to help Shining Stars in other ways to contact her for information.
