Roger Nicholson for Maurice Emmer, Editor-of-the-month

Thursday, February 23, 2017

Sergeant of Arms Jon Kelly presented three relevant President's Day quotations:
George Washington  "I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man".
George Washington  "Worry is the interest paid by those who borrow trouble".
Abraham Lincoln  "Character is like a tree and reputation like shadow.  The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing".

Speaker:  Carol Ott, 'The History of Paper'  Carol started her presentation by reminding us that, in the near past, a 'paperless society' was envisioned.  This has not occurred, far from it as paper is still around and in ever-increasing volume.  Carol demonstrated this by going through a stack of mail she had recently received.  Paper and more paper.  She covered the way(s) paper is made and the evolving technologies for paper manufacturing.  Thousands of pulp mills used to be in the U.S. but environmental concerns and increasing costs of manufacture have shifted the manufacturing to China.  She then shifted into the need for environmental sustainability as the types of paper (recyclable or not) used are very important in this initiative.  The Industry goal is to use emission-free energy, waste reduction, the lowering of greenhouse gases and the support of renewable energy projects as it moves to producing paper with fewer negative effects.

Guests: Randy Woods, Past President of the Snowmass Village Rotary; Ed Queenan, President -Elect of the Carbondale Rotary; Ekkehard Kubler, visiting from the Rotary Chapter in Glenview, Illinois.

Susan Gomes reminds us that The Shining Stars benefit is on Sunday, the 5th of March at The Inn at Aspen.  She is looking for volunteers to donate food--either salads or desserts--and for people who will help serve meals.  The food donations will need to be delivered to The Inn by 4:30 that afternoon.  Servers can show up at 5.  Please contact Susan at susangomes78@gmail.com for details.  Hopefully, Rotarians will pitch in and support this wonderful event.

Visiting Snowmass Village Rotarian, Randy Woods, announced that the annual Snowmass Rotary Ski Meeting will be next Wednesday, the first of March, at Snowmass Ski Area.  Attendees must show up at the Gondola in Snowmass Village @ 7 a.m.  He invites Aspen Rotarians to attend.  Breakfast is a 7:30 at Gwyn's High Alpine and those who have ski passes can recreate after the meeting while those without passes will need to travel down off the mountain. Estimated breakfast cost is @$25.00.

Scott Russell announced that there will be a change in the Speaker format.  Going forward we will not cut off the Q & A at 8:30 but that anyone needing to leave at 8:30 can leave quietly so the Q & A can continue.

Kathy Klug informs us that all Aspen Rotarians, particularly those in business or with business backgrounds, are invited to participate in the Aspen High School Community Connect Council.  She stresses that they are asking for advice, not money.  The initiative is intended to make connections for high school students to local businesses and organizations for academic enrichment and college and career readiness which is the primary objective of this committee.  The Committee is seeking advice and assistance to help insure that Aspen High School programs are preparing students for life after high school.  The first meeting will be held on Friday, March 17 at 8:00 a.m. at the Aspen High School Board of Education Room and that breakfast will be served.

Happy Bucks:  Craig Melville is happy that  the Aspen Fire Department was able to stem flooding in a building.  The flooding was due to a failed smoke detector.  That's the good news.  The bad news was that it occurred at 3 a.m.  Also sleepy was Roger Nicholson, happy that the armed robbery fugitives were apprehended but unhappy that Pitkin Alerts called at 11:05 p.m. to announce this.  Christina King and Dwayne Romero are just happy and Charles Cunniffe is happy that he has been elevated to a Fellow in the Institute of American Architecture.  Todd Shaver is happy that Ashton Hewitt has been promoted at The Aspen Times.  Sam Johnston is happy that our resident Foreign Exchange student, Adriana, celebrated her 17th birthday.  Jon Kelly is happy that his daughter has received the news that she will be spending the next school year in Chamonix, France.
