Regenerating the Environment Through Education

Thursday, November 30, 2017
Speaker: Eden Vardy, Founder and Executive Director of Aspen TREE. Eden and his wife, River Morgan,  founded Aspen TREE in 2008 "to shift the negative tone and guilt-driven action that was pervading the environmental movement, and to provide tools for our community and youth to make it fun to care for our planet and food source."

This November, Aspen TREE was selected by the City of Aspen to be the long term-agricultural leaseholder on 14 acres at Cozy Point Ranch. Their three year plan includes building a farm store, a community commercial kitchen and an education center.

Eden grew up in Aspen. His ambition and enthusiasm were evident during his presentation, which included a video warning of the coming shortage of farmers.  "We want to be the RMI of local agriculture," he said.

Guests:  Tim Morgan (Chris Heaphey), Alexi Salonen (Shaun Hathaway), Andrew Wickes (Steve Wickes)

Rotarians Begin Ringing the Bell

"I have a Rotarian that has offered to match any funds raised up to $5,000." says John Ward.   "So let’s get after it and double the fundraising bang for our ( anonymous Rotarian) bucks… "

Pictured at the right is early-adopter Bob Blaich, testing out a new pot, and, apparently, a new outfit.

Below are two links to sign up for Bell Ringing opportunities at both Clark’s Market and City Market.  "But any time you would be willing to to ring the bell would be greatly appreciated. Please signup early and often!

Shining Stars Love Rotary's Dinner

This week's committee report was from Susan Gomes, who has been organizing a Rotary dinner for participants of the Shining Stars Foundation for more years than anyone can remember!  The dinner, prepared and served by Aspen Rotarians, is "the favorite dinner of the week" according to Susan.

According to their website, Shining Stars provides "programs that help children living with cancer or a life threatening illness move past just trying to survive, to thriving and truly living again. We serve not only the child, but their entire immediate family, including siblings and parents."

Last year, the Aspen Rotary Club served more than 200 dinners at the Inn at Aspen. Stay tuned for this year's event, March 2-9, 2018.
