Speaker:  Farah Pandith is an Indian-American academician and the first ever Special Representative to Muslim Communities for the United States Department of State. She is currently writing a book (to be published in 2017) describing her experiences with Muslim Millennials and presenting a far-reaching redefinition of counter extremist policy solutions. She has spoken at the United Nations, the World Bank, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the British House of Lords, European Union, Aspen Ideas Festival, SXSW, TEDx, and can now add The Rotary Club of Aspen to this prestigious list.

Farah is a proponent of "Open Power," which is the ability to solve critical human challenges through peer-to-peer exploration, collaboration and ownership. She stated that we tend to think about terrorists - mistakenly - as desperate due to poverty. More likely, she says, these young people are in search of identity.

Guests: Stone Davis – guest (and son) of Stoney Davis, Keyla Segovia – Rotary scholarship recipient. Visiting Rotarians:  David GrimesSusan O’NealPaul and Maria Thompson.

President Scott Russell thanked Past-President Craig Melville for obtaining a banner which will remind us of this years theme: "Rotary: Making a Difference." You will need to know this for a future test.

President Russell also shared with the club trivia about redwood forests. You will not need to know this.

Christina King and John Keleher shared letters of appreciation from the Guatemala Literacy Project.

Mike Hoffman, Chair of our Youth Exchange Committee, announced that our incoming exchange student, Nikoline Byrial Hansen (Niki) will be arriving from Denmark in August. Mike encouraged all Rotarians to make plans to invite Niki for a dinner, a hike, a ski day, etc. The first host family will be Preston and Michelle Fox.

Member News

Dan Johns made a generous contribution to the Raffle pool by winning and not drawing the Queen of Hearts. This week's Happy Bucks will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. A surprising number of Rotarians have connections to someone with cystic fibrosis.

To raise more money for Cystic Fibrosis, Craig Melville announced he will be participating in the 2017 CF Climb at Mile-Hi Stadium in Denver last Saturday. Craig will be attempting to climb 3,865 steps - while wearing a full fire-fighting suit! How'd it go Craig?

Visitng Rotarian Paul Thompson, from Hershey PA, contributed to Happy Bucks , thanking us for the "friendly reception" he receives whenever he visits our Thursday meetings.

Highlights from last Friday's Board Meeting:

Ducky Derby: two new organizations received approval for booths at the day-long DD event: Aspen Science Center and Bridging Bionics

Committee Work: President Scott would like to see more frequent committee reports, either at board meetings or at regular meetings. Scott also called for a review of our By-Laws to make sure we are in compliance.

Membership: Our club has two new members as of July 1: Warren Klug, General manager of  Aspen Square Condominum Hotel, and Dave Ressler, CEO of Aspen Valley Hospital. These new members fill slots that were on the Memberships Committee's targeted list for new members. Stand by for the addition of more key leaders in our community, according to committee chair Emily Burr.

Evening Events! President Scott is continuing to work on the concept of having a Rotary Evening Event once-a-quarter. These would not replace the regular morning meeting, but they might provide more connections between Rotary and the community.
