Thought for the day from Audrey Hepburn:  'Nothing is impossible.  The word itself says 'I'm possible'.

Speaker:  Craig Melville  Our President Elect, when faced with a walkout by the Amalgamated Union of Rotary Club Speakers, decided to defy them and become (also) the Speaker Elect.  He recognized the 30 year anniversary of the Challenger Space Mission disaster and its cause.  A video of this terrible event was shown along with some engineering diagrams that substantiated the cause--a failed 'O' ring that was negatively affected by the very cold weather.  Seven astronauts died and a subsequent inquiry found that 'Go Fever' had infected the Mission staff and Engineering people.  They disregarded warnings about the viability of the 'O' rings in very cold weather because political and social pressures were very powerful.  Also, the launch had been delayed for several days and NASA wanted to launch immediately.  Their experts arrived at the decision that NASA wanted and that decision resulted in the disaster.  Craig then discussed the broader subject of how we approach risk in our lives and the influence of outside pressures on whether we take on the risk or shrink from it.

Guests:  Jonathan Nickell (Host--Steve Wickes)
                 Danielle Arca (Host--Christina King)
                 Mike Connolly (Host--Jeanette Darnauer)

Exchange Student Margo Ulrich and her friend Pama Sarick

Upcoming Speakers

Thursday, May 12:  Lara Beaulieu, President of English in Action, a non-profit organization that matches immigrants who want to learn English with volunteer tutors.
Member News

Happy Bucks delivered plenty of Member News.  Maurice Emmer announced that his son, Jackson, has been hired to provide musical entertainment for a large group visiting the Grand Canyon for a week.  Emily Burr thanked everyone who attended her recital.  Steve Seyffert gave Happy Bucks to celebrate a successful ski season and Justin Barrow gave to celebrate that bicycle season was now upon us.  Many others generously donated to support work/cleanup weekend at Aspen Camp May 21 and 22.
Committee News

Ducky Derby Sponsorship Committee:  Frieda Wallison chaired a progress report on 2016 results to date.  There have been a number of real successes lately, lead by Dwayne Romero who reviewed an Email he has been sending to a group of businesses in the local area.  If Dwayne ever needs a second career, he can go into Sales Training.  The Email has produced nearly ten substantial commitments from sponsors, both new and repeat.
Aspen Youth Exchange Committee:  Chair Maurice Emmer enthusiastically announced that two host families have been selected for the incoming student for the next school year.  He gave thanks to Lisa McGuire, mother of Maggie who is presently in Poland as an outbound student.  Lisa has helped in locating interested host families.  Mark and Anne Uhlfelter will be the first hosts for our 2016-2017 exchange student.  Sam Johnston has agreed to also be a host and the Committee is looking for a third host family.
