Volume II, Issue 26, June 27, 2016

In this Issue:

- Ducky Derby T-Shirt Design Unveiling.
- Does the incoming President Elect even know he's been elected? He's not even in the United States.
- We won. We won. Not one, but two major awards.

Special thanks to my secret ninjas Steve Wickes and Lorraine Ohanesian who took photos and recorded the Rotary meeting on Thursday when I didn't make it back from Lake Tahoe in time. I swear it was work. All work. So, this edition is brought to you third-hand, which makes the accuracy guaranteed to be 100% (I promise the important stuff is correct).

Speaker:  Terri Caine, Co-founder and Trustee of Summit 54. Summit 54 works in close partnership with nationally recognized educational organizations, not for profits, government entities, local school districts, teachers and community organizations to bring successful academic programs to Colorado's students. Summit 54's emphasis is on K-12 education and assisting primarily need-based students in the Roaring Fork School District. The goal is to reduce the achievement gap in Colorado and to improve the life prospects of students who benefit from the programs.

Summer Advantage raises educational achievement in its scholars by harnessing the power of summer learning. This five-week program provides opportunity to more than 600 children in the Roaring Fork School District each summer.  Of the students who attend the program, most are in the 30-35th percentile in standardized testing entering the summer, but can jump as much as 14 points by fall re-testing. Statistics show that students who attend the summer program over multiple years will test in the 70th percentile. To learn more about Summer Advantage or to make a donation to this program, read more at Summer Advantage.

Guests: No guests. How is that even possible?

It was just announced that Carbondale Rotarian and Assistant District Governor Chris Peterson will be our District Governor for the term  2018-2019. Chris attended our meeting this week and presented us with two awards that we won at last weekend's District Conference in Grand Junction. Out of 58 clubs in our district, Aspen Rotary won "Outstanding Global Grant for the District." Accepting for our club were Skip Behrhorst and Tom Clark, who, along with several other Rotarians, worked very hard on the Guatemala Literacy Project.

Our club also won an award for being among the "Top Ten Contributors to Polio Plus" last year. Chris mentioned that the next District Conference will be in Glenwood Springs in April, 2017, and he is going to call upon all the clubs in the valley to make it a very different - and better - district conference.

Scott Russell will be the 2016-2017 President Elect. Club President John Ward originally announced Rob Ittner as the incoming President-Elect, but Rob's schedule and commitment to his new business endeavor, the Cooking School of Aspen, will prevent him from filling the role this year. Incoming President Melville is mostly excited that he doesn't have to arrange speakers for a second year. Scott was in Europe last week when the announcement was made, so hopefully he knows.

Maurice Emmer announced that the Telluride Rotary Club overcommitted to three inbound exchange students and are unable to find host families for two of the students. Maurice presented to the Snowmass Rotary Club to ask for their assistance in hosting a student. Anyone who knows a potential host family should contact Maurice ASAP.

Emily Burr announced that the Ducky Derby silent auction is in full swing. If you have an item or know of an item that would be a good fit, contact Emily.

Tues., June 28 - Changeover Dinner. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Cooking School of Aspen located at 305 E. Hopkins (corner of Hopkins and Monarch behind Rustique). Come experience Rotarian Rob Ittner's most recent culinary adventure and enjoy dinner with an international flair. There is no charge for member Rotarians and guests will be $40 (charge will be billed to your account). The first drink is included and a cash bar will be available all night.

Also, bring cash for the Super Raffle. Each ticket is $20 and the proceeds will be split between the winning ticket holder and the Aspen Camp. Just think, if we sold  only 50 tickets, the Aspen Camp would receive $500 on behalf of our club.

To RSVP, email Lorraine at lo@core-svc.com.

Mon., July 4 - July 4th Parade. The Rotary Ducky Derby float will be championed by Past President John Ward. Please show up downtown to help John decorate the float beginning at 9:30 a.m. He will parked near the parade start. Volunteers are needed to ride on the float and throw frisbees and wave at kiddies.
Committee News

As promised, Robin Smith unveiled the 2016 line of Ducky Derby wear at Thursday's meeting. If you thought last year's shirts were a significant upgrade, wait until you see this year's amazing wearable art. Our favorite yellow duck is super-imposed over a vintage postcard.
