Adriana Martinez, our 2016-2017 Rotary Exchange Student from Torrelodones, Madrid, Spain will be arriving in Aspen on August 14. Let's have a large contingent of Rotarians meet her at the Aspen Airport at 10:44 AM on Sunday, August 14 (the day after Ducky Derby). Adriana is a competitive skater.

Special thanks to her first host parents, Anne and Mark Uhlfelder. And special, special thanks to our RYE Committee chair, Maurice Emmer, for his tireless dedication to our high school youth exchange program.

Speaker:  Paloma Lopez, Global Sustainability Director, Kellogg Company. In her work in the U.S. and internationally, Paloma helps farmers adopt better sustainability practices and adapt to climate change. Draw-dropping fact: more than 33% of agricultural products never make it to consumers due to post-harvest food loss!

Paloma was nominated to be a member of the 2016 First Movers Fellowship Program at the Aspen Institute. This program  "is an innovation lab and leadership development program for corporate intrapreneurs – accomplished innovators inside companies – who are creating new products, services and management practices." -Institute web site.

Guests: Liz O’Connell and Laura Armstrong (Aspen ZGreen); Bill Hodges (John Keleher), Jeff Erwin (Greg Erwin), Shaun Hathaway (Ashton Hewitt). Super Duck salesperson, Sky Sosna, and his mom, Domie Sosna.

Sky Sosna, attended Rotary last week to give Rotarians a few tips on selling ducks. According to a recent story on Aspen Public Radio, Sky has been in front of Clark's Market almost every day for the past month. Last year, Sky raised $6,000 for the Aspen Valley Ski Club. This year his goal is to sell $15,00.  Sky reported to Rotarians that he has already sold "about $16,000" this year. So much for that goal!

Got a spare tablet?  We need three or four tablets – Verizon or AT&T compatible – for use on the day of the event for credit card purchases in the merchandise tent, silent auction and ticket booth.  No data plan is needed, we will have that part covered.  We will download the credit card app processing program (through Alpine Bank), and we will have the card sliders to use.  If you have an extra to spare or have any questions, please contact Lorraine.

Upcoming Speakers

Thursday, August 4, at the Aspen Meadows. Ducky Derby Prep. Recently, some of our "work meetings" have turned out to be the most fun! And with the most time for Happy Bucks. Rotarians attending this week's meeting will get the fun jobs; absent Rotarians will be assigned the less-desirable jobs by Diva Duck Susan Gomes.

Thursday, August 4: Deadline for Silent Auction Items; bring these to Aspen Sports, 408 E. Cooper.

Sunday, August 14: Welcome our new exchange student at the airport (see above).

Thursday August 25, 6:00 PM:  Guest Bill Hodges invited Rotarians to a dinner at the Little Nell. "A BBQ competition and community fundraiser featuring talented chefs from Aspen’s top restaurants. Each chef will showcase their best BBQ and let you be the judge."* Benefitting the Aspen Homeless Shelter. (*Plagiarized from the Little Nell web site.) Tickets $122 online at Eventbrite. According to Bill, Aspen has 100-150 homeless citizens!

Thursday, September 8: Rotary breakfast. Both of our "rebounding" exchange students will attend at present.

Really? Undocumented guest Jacob (son of Justin Barrow) won the ticket raffle two weeks in a row! Behave! sergeant-at-arms Jon Kelly is back after a month of traveling. It was great to see Greg Erwin back at Rotary this week. Bennett Bramson, legendary duck salesman, acknowledged newly-famous Sky Sosna with some Happy Bucks (see above).
