I'm happy to be back behind the keyboard for the June editions of your weekly Rotary newsletter. As always, I'll seek to entertain and inform. If there's something you'd like to see included in a newsletter, send it my way. I love photos, jokes and anything that can be used to poke fun of our Rotary president or any of his cabinet.

Samantha Johnston, Editor-of-the-month

Speaker:  Kayce Anderson, Executive Director of For the Good Period.  Adolescent girls in developing countries miss up to six weeks of school each year. One of the primary barriers occurs when they don't have the means to deal with menstruation when they reach puberty.

For the Good Period works to empower adolescent girls in developing countries to continue their education by providing them access to health information and access to sanitary products so that menstruation is not an obstacle to school attendance. Some girls cannot afford sanitary products and for others, they simply do not have access. Many girls simply drop out of school when they are not able to manage menstruation each month. Girls that drop out of school early earn significantly less income over their lifetime, tend to marry early, become pregnant at a younger age, and engage in coercive sex. And girls that drop out of school lose the immense potential they have to improve the prosperity of their communities.

For the Good Period is manufacturing and distributing reusable sanitary pads and providing basic reproductive health education to adolescent girls in developing countries. To learn more, visit http://www.forthegoodperiod.org.

Sgt. at Arms Jon Kelly presented the "thought for the day" which involved a quote from one of his favorite movies, "Six Degrees of Separation."
Ouisa Kitteridge: I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation between us and everyone else on this planet. The President of the United States, a gondolier in Venice, just fill in the names. I find it extremely comforting that we're so close. I also find it like Chinese water torture, that we're so close because you have to find the right six people to make the right connection ... I am bound, you are bound, to everyone on this planet by a trail of six people.

Raffle: First, it should be noted that Doug Peckham won the raffle at the May 25 meeting and generously donated the entire pot - $565 -  back to the Aspen Camp. Steve Syffert had the winning ticket this week. He didn't draw the winning card, but we're confident he would have donated his winnings if he had.

Happy Bucks:  Steve Syffert is happy that is daughter Bryce is graduating from DU and has a job - sadly, he thinks that means she's off the payroll ; Justin Barrow is happy that his son Jacob graduated from kindergarten - the expensive payroll is just beginning for Justin; Christina King is happy to have found mentorship and friendship from some many in the club - she also noted that some of the Rotarians sitting beside her are in history books (take that for what you will, but I think she called her friends and mentors old); Visiting Rotarian Ranjit Rawlley is happy that our club is so successful with events such as Ducky Derby and he thanked us for our contributions to the world; Roger Nicholson is happy that it's Sam Johnston's turn to do the newsletter; Ruth Kruger is happy to have returned from real estate business in Panama and she also ran into Kurt Bresnitz who misses the club and would love visitors; Frieda Wallison is happy that the club met its Ducky Derby fundraising goal; Chris Bendon is happy that Frieda is not only off of the injured reserve list, but back in the game, and, speaking of injured reserves, he's happy that he and his dad ran the Bolder Boulder as has been their annual tradition for more than 20 years.

Guests:  Jennifer Allen, guest of Emily Burr; Jason Taets, guest of Dwayne Romero; Ranjit Rawlley, a visiting Rotarian from Charlotte, NC.
Maggie McGuire turned 17 in Poland last week. Maggie had some technical difficulties with her old blog site, so she had to create a new one, which you can view here to keep up with Maggie's adventures abroad: http://maggieinpoland2.weebly.com/. In case you were dying to know who Daga, Kasia and Magda are, there's more detail in Maggie's blog, but they are the three sisters living in her current host family home. Maggie looks and sounds like she is doing well. This photo is from a recent trip to Monaco.

Maggie reports that her Polish is getting quite good and she can understand most everything she hears conversationally as well as speak fluently enough to say most everything on her mind.

If you would like to keep in touch with Maggie or send her words of encouragement in the home stretch of her exchange, feel free to email her at: maggiemcg@gmail.com

We look forward to hosting Adriana Romeo Martinez from Madrid, Spain in August. Maurice Emmer will provide more details as the date gets closer.

Committee News
Frieda Wallison announced that the Ducky Derby Committee has exceeded its fundraising goal of $125,000 and, as of Thursday, they had $127,100 committed.

Frieda asked the entire committee to stand before the club to be recognized for their efforts this year. It should be noted the Mike Kosdrosky insisted on staying at his table and it's probably because he was afraid if he stood up front, he would be forced to take the $ necklace home. It's unclear who did take that thing home, but Chris Bendon was last seen holding it after Frieda tried to make Dwayne Romero take it. Frieda made special shout-outs to Lorraine Ohanesian for being the glue that binds the club and Christina King who has "an idea a minute." Committee members present included: Dwayne Romero, John Sarpa, Bob Porter, Jon Kelly, Chris Bendon, Christina King, Todd Brewer, Jeanette Darnauer, John Engels and Mike Kosdrosky. You guys rock!

Did you know that Ducky Derby has its own website thanks to Bill Simon? It has great information, plus it's a place to buy and sell ducks, get information about Ducky Derby day and track our fundraising progress. Have friends who would buy ducks, but aren't in town? No problem ~ they can buy millions of dollars worth with the click of a button. Check it out: https://www.fundlyenterprise.com/Event/DuckyDerby2016#/
