Volume II, Issue 17, April 21, 2016 ~ THE THERAPIST'S EDITION

Dear Rotarians,
Brene Brown, one of my favorites, concludes from her research, "Connection is defined as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give an receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationships."
Following a brief conversation with Steve Wickes after breakfast today, he makes note about the SPIRIT our club has exhibited in the past several months and believes HAPPY BUCKS is the answer. I agreed, it's the part of breakfast when we share a piece of ourselves. I won't lie, the first time I shared a buck, I was shaking in my knees and the words barely reached my lips. It's a vulnerable experience to share a part of you in front of a large group. But the cause was worthy, and that was my motivation. I believe more recently, however, in addition to giving to the cause, it feels good to be seen, heard, valued and, in turn, hear each other's stories, accomplishments, words of wisdom, or throw a little flare at someone else. It's a way we have connected to be more open, genuine, and supportive. Although Happy Bucks were passed up today, I believe the time we give to let each other be seen, heard, and valued is sometimes the most important.
Sincerely,
The Psychotherapist

Emily shares briefly her touching experience this year at Roaring Fork Leadership as she introduces their service project for 2016; Drivers Assisting Seniors for Health (DASH). DASH is is a collaborative effort between Pitkin and Eagle County Senior Services that connects seniors living in the Roaring Fork Valley with volunteer drivers who provide them safe transportation to and from critical medical appointments and other important life necessities.

Currently RFL members are working to raise awareness DASH among the senior and volunteer population in our Valley. Although they are working on a website, they are ready to start their work by building a volunteer base and connecting them with in-need seniors - Todd Shave. RFL is also interested in reaching more community members or linking up with your business. Click HERE to learn more.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 100% PARTICIPATION AND WHAT WE DO? Kurt Adam, Rotary Foundation Committee chair, reminded the club that it's been a few years since our club was recognized as a "100% Club" by the Rotary Foundation. It terms of dollars contributed, Aspen is often in the top three clubs in our district to be a "100 % Club." For this to happen we need every member to contribute $100 per year!

Member News
SPECIAL EDITION by Steve Wickes. Steve subscribes to a blog by Rotarian Jim Henry from Mountain View, CA.  For years, Mr. Henry has been critical of our leaders at Rotary International, saying they are asleep-at-the-wheel as Rotary membership declines - especially membership in the U.S. In his latest blog, Henry gives RI a surprisingly positive report card. "Rotary future is getting brighter," he writes. Thanks to our current RI President Ravindran our next RI President, Germ (yes that's really his name), RI may be turning a corner in terms of reversing the declining membership in Rotary Clubs.

For CREATING A POWERFUL GUIDING COALITION RI gets a 100% this year.  The 2016 Council on Legislation created a standing membership committee this year. Who knew that RI never had a standing membership development committee!

Unfortunately, in terms of COMMUNICATION, RI still receives a failing grade of 20%. According to Henry, past leaders at RI have been stuck in an outdated, self-created job description.  They continue to believe - and communicate - that RI is in the business of supplying humanitarian services rather than in the business of creating Rotarians. It's actually individual clubs and Rotarians who supply the humanitarian services, according to Henry. Read the full blog post here.
